Do security signs work? Yes, but only when there is a real system standing behind the sign.
That little yard sign is the first thing a burglar reads about your house. Here is what research on convicted burglars says, where the sign belongs, and why a sign with nothing behind it is a gamble.
So, do security signs work? Think of a sign as a headline. It tells a burglar, in about two seconds, that this house might be more trouble than the one next door. A headline only works when the story underneath is true. The alarm, the cameras, and the monitoring are the story.
CSS Man: I do not need a sign. I can just fly over the fence. I have been practicing.
Wendy: You have been practicing falling over the fence. The sign has a better track record than you do.
What Burglars Say About Security Signs and Alarms
The most useful research we know of comes straight from the people who did the breaking in. Researchers at UNC Charlotte surveyed 422 incarcerated burglars in North Carolina, Kentucky, and Ohio about how they pick a house. Their findings, published by UNC Charlotte, are worth reading slowly:
- 83% said they would try to find out whether an alarm was present before breaking in.
- 60% said they would look for a different target if an alarm was on site.
- When an alarm turned up in the middle of a break-in, about half said they would stop, and only 13% said they would always keep going.
- Burglars weighed signs of increased security, including alarm signs, dogs, and cameras, along with how many people were nearby and how easy it was to get away.
🔍 CSS Man Mythbusters
Three sign myths we hear all the time. Wendy has the receipts.
Myth“Any security sign will keep burglars away.”
TruthSigns work best when they match real protection. Burglars in the UNC Charlotte survey were checking for actual alarms, and a sign with nothing behind it is a bluff.
Myth“A fake camera does the same job as a real one.”
TruthA fake can look scary from the street, but it records nothing. If someone does get close, you have no video, no evidence, and no alert.
Myth“I have a sign, so I do not need an alarm or cameras.”
TruthThe sign is the first speed bump, not the whole road. Pair it with a monitored alarm and cameras so it is telling the truth.
A Sign Is a Promise. Make Sure You Can Keep It.
This is where we get a little bossy, because we have seen it go wrong. A sign tells the neighborhood you have protection. If you do not, you are counting on a burglar to believe a bluff. Some will. Some will walk right up and check. A sign with no system behind it also gives you a false sense of safety, which is the most dangerous kind.
A bluff
- Costs almost nothing
- Might make someone move on
- Nobody is watching if it fails
A warning with proof
- Video of anyone who comes close
- Evidence for police and insurance
- Great for deterring snoops
The whole story
- Monitored alarm responds, even when you are asleep
- Cameras show what actually happened
- The sign is now telling the truth
Not sure whether you need both? Our guide on whether you need an alarm if you already have cameras walks through it. And if you are tempted by a bargain sign from a company you do not use, skip it. Brand signs are meant for customers of that company, and a burglar who knows the neighborhood may know the difference.

Where Security Signs Belong on a South Florida Home
Placement matters as much as the sign itself. A sign nobody can see only impresses your lawn. Here is how we think about it when we walk a property in Royal Palm Beach, Wellington, or Loxahatchee.
The yard sign
- Visible from the road and sidewalk
- Placed where a person approaching will read it
- Check your HOA rules on yard signs first
Door and gate decals
- Front door, garage side door, and gates
- First-floor windows people can reach
- Small stickers work best here
Lanai, pool, and fence line
- Burglars love the side you rarely look at
- Pair a sign with a visible camera
- Add a motion light to finish the job

What a Burglar Sees, Step by Step
Think of your house as a series of speed bumps. Each one is small. Together they send a burglar to the next street.
The sign and a visible camera
The first decision is made here. A real-looking setup says “this one takes effort.”
Our take: sign at the curb, camera covering the driveway and front door.Decals, doorbell camera, and light
Up close, a burglar checks for cameras and sensors. Visible cameras and bright lighting make most people nervous.
Our take: decals on doors and windows, plus motion lighting. The alarm
A door or window opens and a loud siren goes off. In the UNC Charlotte survey, an alarm going off was often enough to make burglars quit.
Our take: door, window, and motion sensors on every way in.Monitoring and video
A real person calls, police can be dispatched, and you get the clip on your phone. That is what makes the sign honest.
Our take: alarm and cameras in one app, ADT+ or Google Home, your choice.Palm Beach County Details Worth Knowing
Here in Palm Beach County, anyone operating an alarm system is expected to register it. Before you put up an alarm sign, make sure your permit is in order. The Sheriff’s Office explains who is required to have an alarm permit, and we have a full guide on stopping false alarms and avoiding fines. We also help our customers get their permits, so you do not have to chase paperwork.
Seasonal resident? A sign matters even more when nobody is home for months. See our snowbird home security guide. And if you are wondering how a monitored system affects your homeowners policy, here is the story on insurance premiums and security systems. Remember that the sign alone is not what insurers look for.
🦺 CSS Man Tips & Tricks
Straight from the truck, with Wendy keeping him on the ground.
- Read it from the sidewalk. If you cannot read your sign from the street, a burglar cannot either. Move it out from behind the hedge.
- Beat the Florida sun. A faded, peeling sign looks abandoned. Replace sun-bleached signs and decals each season.
- Trim the hedges. Overgrown plants hide signs and block camera views. A quick trim helps both.
- Light it up. A motion light over the door makes your sign and camera easy to spot at night.
- Retire old signs. Switched companies or moved? Take down signs for a service you no longer have.

Where to Put Them
- One sign visible from the street

- Decals on reachable first-floor windows

Security Signs: Quick Answers
Do security signs and stickers really stop burglars?
They can make a burglar pick an easier house, especially when the sign matches a real alarm or cameras. Research on convicted burglars shows many check for alarms first and move on when they find one. A sign alone is not a guarantee.
Is it okay to put up a security sign if I do not have a system?
It may slow down some opportunists, but it can also give you a false sense of safety. If you want a visible deterrent while you plan a real system, a generic camera or alarm notice is better than a copy of a brand you do not use. The real fix is a real system.
Will a security sign lower my homeowners insurance?
Not by itself. Insurers usually ask about a professionally monitored system, not a sign. Ask your agent what they need. We can help with the paperwork.
How many signs should I have?
One that is visible from the street, a few decals at doors and windows, and one at the side or back of the house is a good start. More is not always better. Signs should look neat and match the protection you actually have.
Do you install alarms and cameras in my area?
Yes. We are based in Royal Palm Beach and serve Palm Beach, Martin, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties. Browse our services or the FAQs for more.
