We just unboxed the new ADT+ system. Here’s what actually impressed us — and where we land on ADT vs DIY systems after installing both for years.

If your last mental picture of ADT is a beige keypad and a landline, this genuinely isn’t that system anymore.
Live Light: The Feature That Actually Stopped Us
Live Light is a wireless yard sign that connects directly to the ADT+ system and physically lights up and flashes when an alarm triggers. It’s being called the industry’s first illuminated yard sign of its kind, and the idea is simple but genuinely clever: instead of a static sign that just says a house is protected, it becomes an active signal the moment something happens — visible to responding officers or firefighters, and to anyone else nearby.
It also does double duty as a deterrent before anything goes wrong — a sign that can visibly react is a very different message to someone casing a property than a sign that’s just sitting there.
We heard a story recently about a house fire that happened overnight — the kind of scenario Live Light was clearly designed around. The house filled with smoke fast, and the people inside ended up trapped in a second-floor bedroom. In situations like that, firefighters are working against seconds, and simply finding the right house in the dark, through smoke, on a street that looks like every other street, is its own real obstacle.
That’s the problem Live Light is actually solving. It’s not a flashy add-on for its own sake — it’s aimed squarely at the handful of seconds that matter most in the worst-case scenario, by making a house impossible to miss exactly when it matters.
The Life Safety Layer Most People Don’t Ask About
Live Light gets the attention because it’s visual and dramatic, but the ADT+ ecosystem extends further than the front yard. My Safety, built into the app, adds things like personal safety timers and silent emergency texting that connect straight to ADT’s monitoring network — useful well beyond the four walls of the house. And ADT’s broader life safety lineup extends to things like fall detection for elderly or at-risk family members, which is worth asking about specifically if that’s a concern in your household, since availability and setup can vary by plan.
This is the part that gets real fast for a lot of the families we work with. If your mom is living on her own down in Boca Raton, a safety timer that pings you if she doesn’t check in after her morning walk, or fall detection that can reach monitoring even if she can’t get to a phone, isn’t a hypothetical selling point — it’s the actual reason a lot of Palm Beach County families start asking about this system by name.
ADT vs DIY Systems: So Why Does This Still Need a Professional Installer?
This is the part we obviously have a stake in, so take it with that in mind — but it’s also the honest answer, and it hasn’t changed even as DIY systems have gotten genuinely good. That’s exactly the kind of setup a professional installation is built to get right the first time.
It shows up even more on the properties that don’t fit a standard template. Picture an equestrian estate out in Wellington — a main house, a barn, guest quarters, and acres of ground in between. “Point a camera at the driveway” isn’t a security plan for a property like that; it takes actually walking the grounds to find where the real gaps sit, which is a hard thing to do accurately from a self-install kit and a set of peel-and-stick instructions.
